Our House My House KC, Inc. is dedicated to supporting youth and adults with developmental disabilities as well as a history of emotional and social difficulties, by teaching them daily living skills, self-determination and relationship development
The late Rick Williams founded “My House” in April of 1997. Rick worked as a professional in Health and Human Services beginning in 1985 and was a strong advocate in helping others to lead active, happy and productive lives. After his death, his sister, May, and many of his original employees carried on his work. In June of 2001, “My House” opened its first ISL in Boonville, MO, under the guidance of the Central Missouri Regional Center. In November of 2003, the agency became incorporated and in May 2012 the agency become for-profit which necessitated a name change, Our House My House KC, Inc. In December of 2003, Our House was presented with the “Provider of the Year Award” from the Central Missouri Regional Center. Rick’s dream has blossomed under May’s leadership and the individuals receiving supports have continued to make great progress. It is their hopes and dreams that remain the agency’s number one priority.
Goal: The goal of Our House is to teach the people served to be their best selves, through quality and caring residential services.
Focus: The focus of the program is training in interpersonal relationships. Our individuals learn and grow, as they become a part of the Our House family. They begin to care about themselves and others as they form bonds with the staff and each other.
Emergency Interventions: A priority for the staff is training to recognize signs of increasing levels of frustration and agitation, with techniques to remain calm and supportive at all times. The staff intervenes quickly, encouraging the person to discuss their feelings and work out the problem in a positive way.
Person Centered Planning: Our House teaches individuals to learn to be as self-sufficient as possible and to express their wants and needs. Detailed Person-Centered planning methods are consistently used in meeting that goal. As needed, each Person-Centered Plan has a detailed behavior support component.
Positive Behavior Supports: Staff are fully trained to use positive interventions in response to inappropriate behaviors. These strategies include intervening early, offering frequent opportunities for success, behaving and communicating respectfully toward the individual, teaching replacement behaviors, and providing reinforcement for success. A psychiatrist is always closely consulted for medication management.
Medicaid Waiver Principles: Medicaid Waiver Principles are fully incorporated into the person's life. Health and safety come first in all aspects of daily life at Our House. We provide consistent medical services using the best physicians and specialists possible. All medical issues receive follow-up. Community involvement and interaction improve self-esteem and independence. Opportunities are provided for individuals to take trips, encounter new experiences and broaden their view of life. Through making contributions to their home and the community, individuals learn to focus on others instead of their own problems.
